Named after 19th-century horticulturist William Cattley, the Cattleya orchid is celebrated for its vibrant, fragrant blooms and was one of the first exotic orchids grown in Singapore during its colonial botanical heyday. While not native, it thrived in the region’s tropical climate and became a symbol of elite gardens. Today, though dwarfed by Singapore’s national flower (Vanda Miss Joaquim), Cattleyas remain a favorite in ornamental displays, reflecting the island’s rich orchid-growing legacy.
