In the mid-19th century, Emerald Hill was part of a sprawling nutmeg and spice plantation owned by Seah Eu Chin, a wealthy Chinese merchant and early pioneer. After the plantation declined in the 1860s, the land was subdivided and developed into a residential enclave for affluent Peranakan (Straits Chinese) and European families. Today, the area’s past is echoed in its name and the lush greenery surrounding its iconic colorful Peranakan shophouses, now a conserved heritage zone near Orchard Road.
